MOUNTON MILL CIRCULAR TAKING IN MOUNTON BROOK

Mathern Mill circular taking in Mounton Brook

This starts going towards the Mathern Milll Fishing Lakes, but is a longer walk.  It is good for runners with some ups and downs but no huge hills.  It goes through fields at the back of the village, and then on quiet roads.

  • Leave the Welsh Gatehouse
  • Go down drive and turn left,
  • Go under bridge.
  • At signpost and red dog poo bin turn left along the earthen path ///directs.innovator.departure

  • You’ll come to a gate on your right, go through that ///exhale.galloped.steed

  • Follow the path straight on
  • You’ll come to a place ///browser.frown.exact where there is a path off to your left which would take you down to Mathern Mill Fisheries.  BUT continue straight on.,

  • When you get to ///helpers.awestruck.newsstand then turn right along the road Baileys Hay
  • At the junction go straight over – into Chapel Lane – you are on a road
  • Take first left into Orchid Meadow
  • Take first left and go to ///demotion.commands.erase which is the start of an alley way. Go down the alley
  • At ///reeling.following.scar you’ll meet Mounton Brook for a short time (there are no easy access places for dogs to paddle).  The stream may dry up in hot weather.
  • Continue walking to ///roofed.engage.overruns, where the path meets the road, and turn left onto the A48
  • Take the first right into ///firework.pavillions.label (the next section is all on quiet roads)
  • Take the first left into Runston Road ///factoring.noisy.husky You may see an ostrich in the fields on the left, as you walk along this road!
  • Follow this and take the first left ///improving.breakfast.misfits into an unmade road Hayesgate Lane
  • Continue straight on (onto a proper road, Hayesgate Lane) and follow round to the left.
  • At Tjunction with A48 turn left
  • Take first right into Baileys Hay ///export.ringside.breached
  • Follow the road past Mathern Mill ///ship.lightbulb.ticked. This water mill dates back to the late 17th century.  They usually have an open weekend in May each year.
  • At ///helpers.awestruck.newsstand you can either
    • bear right ///icebergs.brave.flipper and go into the Mathern Mill Fisheries and walk around the two fishing lakes (dogs must be kept on leads),
    • Go straight on and retrace the first part of your walk, through the fields
    • Stay on roads, and follow the road around to the left ///coconuts.united.shall
    • At ///scribble.crush.diverts turn right onto Mathern Road ///masterpiece.moving.survey and walk through the village
    • You could pop into the Millers Arms on your left for a quick refreshment
    • Go under the motorway bridge, and then turn right up the drive to return to the Welsh Gatehouse.
