We booked this accommodation online and received comprehensive instructions on how to find the gatehouse, which worked perfectly.  We were able to arrange to let ourselves in, which was great as we arrived late at night.

As you approach the gatehouse down a long drive, bordered with daffodils, you come upon the building, which looks fantastic from the outside and once you park up and enter the accommodation, you are transported back to medieval times, climbing a circular stone staircase to reach the main living area.

The accommodation is very welcoming with huge windows and full length drape style curtains, which add to the effect of the old style building and decor. There is a large leather sofa, in front of a log burning fire, and a well equipped kitchen if you decide to do your own meals. We ate the first night in the village local pub, The Millers Arms, which does reasonable food at reasonable prices. The second night, we ate ate The Whitebrook, a Michelin starred restaurant, about 14 miles away. Pricey as you would expect, but a great evening out.

A welcome pack is provided with wine, bread, jams and Welsh cakes and condiments and other essentials are in the cupboard.

The bedroom area on the upper mezzanine is accessed by climbing a ladder and ducking under a beam, but we both managed this fine (but if you are less able it might be problematic).  Once up there, the bed was very comfortable and it was very quiet, with only the occasional bleat of a sheep!

A tip for anyone considering the property, is to take hand luggage cases or soft bags as it makes it easier to climb the stairs with your luggage. Large hard type suitcases would not be an easy climb up the staircase.

The owners (Juliet and William) say they like to give their guests privacy, which was perfect for us.  And because they didn’t have guests coming in straight away, they allowed us a late checkout. We were able to stay until 4pm – it was wonderfully relaxing and worth every penny.  I would thoroughly recommend a break here.

Photo posted on the poet David Whyte’s facebook page, this picture from the desk in the Gatehouse, with the words of one of his poems AND I FOUND from the House of Belonging. I guess this means he liked it!!  He must have taken the photo when he visited us, and read for On The Border, our poetry series.  Check out David Whyte (the poet’s) facebook page, photo of the desk in the Gatehouse and his poem, by clicking here.

Comments From Our Gatehouse Guest Book

Couldn’t have asked for more – we had a fantastic time! We were welcomed with a lovely generous welcome basket and the facilities wereexcellent! We were left alone (much better than being overlooked) – we miss it and would love to go again.

Perfect few days – wish it could have been longer. So relaxing, charming and pure escapism.

What a perfect weekend retreat! A day at the races, walk around Chepstow castle and tomorrow fly boarding at the diving centre. Such an amazing piece of history beautifully maintained and welcoming.

Your Gatehouse is beautiful and so warm and welcoming. There is something magical about sitting in front of the fire on a stormy evening. A tastefully modernised piece of history.

Thankyou for a such a warm welcome and lovely stay. The Gatehouse is a wonderful retreat – we even saw a shooting star from the roof-top. We had a great day out at St Fagans and are certainly planning on returning soon.

Everything it was cracked up to be! When you want to get away, this is the hideaway. Many thanks.

We absolutely love this place! We came here for our honeymoon and had a wonderful time.

We have had an unforgettable weekend break – we got engaged in candlelit on the Turret and the setting could not have been more perfect.

This was worth the 20 hrs flight from Australia. Absolutely beautiful place to start our holiday. Thanks for allowing us to share your paradise.

Thankyou for the walking instructions around the area, had a great time exploring the country. Anytime we come back to Wales this will be the place we stay at.

We spent a lovely, peaceful cosy weekend celebrating our 10th anniversary. The gatehouse is full of atmosphere. We recommend Caerleon!

We had a lovely Birthday weekend staying in the Gatehouse, we loved coming in and getting toasty by the fire.

This must be the most unusual accommodation we have experienced. We have greatly enjoyed our week. This is a beautiful, peaceful location and we particularly recommend “The Crown” at Whitebrook for high quality dining. (Feb 13)

Thanks for such a lovely 2 days of peace, silence and ultimate relaxation. We will be back!

This was our first Christmas spent as a couple away from our families and it was PERFECT! I was ecstatic to find this mini castle decked out for a cosy Christmas!

What a magical place – our very own castle decorated beautifully with holly, mistletoe and wonderful Christmas tree. A perfect way to round off the year.

Our second visit to the beautiful gatehouse. I think this may be a yearly event for my partners birthday… it’s quirky, fun and cosy. The perfect getaway! (Dec 12)

This will be the third time we have stayed at the gorgeous gatehouse and never tire of this place. We come here to relax before the stress of life before Christmas comes!

Transported back in time……Wonderful!

Fantastic. Beautiful, romantic place. Recommend the Millers Arms – lovely meal and walking distance.

This will absolutely be a highlight of our trip. I’ll never forget the look on my husbands face when we pulled up.

Amazing place to relax. Scenery is amazing. This place is magical. So many things to do and see. Thank you.

A wonderful retreat away from everyday life! We have enjoyed our stay so much and explored Wales from Caerphilly Castle, Elan Valley, Tintern Abbey and Newport RSPB. The welcome basket is a thoughtful gesture.

Fantastic place, unique I imagine. We’ll be wanting to come back. It was a great week and a great experience.

From the time we saw the Welsh Gatehouse on the website, we fell in love with it – and travelled halfway around the world to stay here. (Australia)

Torn between telling everyone we know about this place, and keeping it our own little secret, but will definitely be back.

A most romantic retreat and so tastefully furnished – just the right amount of luxury and understated elegance. A beautiful house – recommended.

I really did feel like a Princess staying in the castle gatehouse! A stunning setting in a beautiful building.

An Amazing place and so charismatic. I could go on for paragraphs about the various quirks that made us smile and differentiated our stay from most other places. We will certainly be recommending it.

For the past four days we have felt like a Prince and Princess in our own little castle what a fab place. We will definitely be back soon. Created memories that will never be forgotten.

‘A perfect, cosy, secluded, romantic haven’

‘Very friendly and informal but very well appointed. Unusual and interesting place for the perfect getaway’

‘A charming setting for our wedding anniversary get-away without the children. Every need had been catered for in advance, a lot of lovely extra touches. We’re torn between raving about this gem to everyone we know and keeping it to ourselves to guarantee some availability! Don’t worry Juliet….. It’ll be the former. Thank you so much’

‘What an exciting place to stay especially for castle lovers like us! Would recommend a visit to Chepstow Castle – it just goes on and on! We particularly enjoyed a walk around the local fields looking back over the trees to see “our tower”.’

‘Oohh, we like it here. A lot. We’ve had a lovely time exploring. Good hilly walks, mountain biking in the Forest of Dean (hire bikes from Pedal-a-bike-away near Coleford, you can book them and there are great trails, all marked), and some more hilly walks. We had a good (if a bit pricey) meal at The Foxhunter in Nant-y-Derry. And the best bit? Coming back to ‘our’ castle. Thank you.’

‘Very quiet, peaceful and comfortable. A great place…we didn’t want to go out. And some great films on the library on the TV kept us in too. Loved the towers. Kibby’s fish and chips were great (Bulwark)’

‘What a find! We have enjoyed our short stay here. Beautiful contryside, lovely accommodation. Thank you for all your assistance. Well worth the visit.’

‘Cocktails on the roof terrace become a regular occurance at sunset (unbeatable). We recommend Coffee#1 in Chepstow and Monmouth and the First Class Cafe in Chepstow railway station. Great walking and cycle rides.

‘It is, as described on the website, the perfect couple retreat. Three days was not long enough – we hope to be back again soon. Thank you Juliet and William for sharing such a special place and for all your kindnesses and welcome. ‘

‘We enjoyed a three night stay in the Gatehouse to celebrate my husband’s birthday. A warm welcome from William (the fire had been lit in readiness for our arrival), a generous selection of treats and we were left to enjoy ourselves. The kitchen was well equipped – we were too cosy staying in to bother going out to eat – and rustled up some lovely meals. Sofa perfect for cuddling up in front of the fire, watching a dvd. Comfy bed – a great balance of mod cons and sense of history. Perfect for a weekend away from the family!’

‘Who needs a ‘Welsh Country Cottage’ when you can have your own mini castle! I want to live here! Thanks’

‘Gosh – an oustanding place. So much history and we went for a stunning dinner at the Whitebrook – only 1/2 hour drive. Tintern Abbey is a delight. The road to Monmouth via Trellech was amazingly beautiful and the peace here was outstanding. Thoroughly recommend this wonderful place.’
